Many supergroups come and go without making an impression. Motion I from Out Of/Into is the exception to that rule. Formerly known as The Blue Note Quintet, this collective was formed in honor of the 85th anniversary of Blue Note Records, with pianist Gerald Clayton, alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, vibraphonist Joel Ross, drummer Kendrick Scott and bassist Matt Brewer, and has since the opening song Ofafrii hear what they have to offer. Although this is their first album, they have already played quite a few concerts and that is clearly evident in the close ensemble. Wilkins, Clayton and Ross take turns soloing at great heights, while the quintet maintains a tight and harmonious sound that is almost enchanting, held together by the solid rhythm tandem of Scott and Brewer. This group embodies everything Blue Note stands for and delivers a five-star album with lots of fireworks. (Jos van den Berg)
