It wasn't really a movement, more a moment that revealed a new musical direction, especially a positive one. "3 Feet High And Rising", De La Soul's debut album combined pop, R&B and hip hop. It was also the inspiration for the "Native Tongues" collective from New York in the UK. This included Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, De La Soul, Brand Nubian/Grand Puba, Monie Love or Black Star.
Characteristic of this association was to spread a political consciousness in the African-American society and in hip-hop, which was to extend to the middle class. Since hip-hop music had previously been produced more for socially disadvantaged segments of society, more intellectual content prevailed here, which was welcomed by middle-class society, but was too far removed from the ghettos and the streets to have any appeal there.
Releases of these groups were usually characterized by very experimental sounds and intellectual lyrics, which were in contrast to the dominant gangsta rap. The sampler "The Daisy Age" contains 20 selected tracks from the phase.
