Giannascoli has been drawn in recent years to musicians like Gillian Welch and writers like Joy Williams, artists who balance the public and the hermetic, and who present faith as a shared social language rather than a religious doctrine. Filtering his experiences through fact and fiction, Giannascoli also opened up the songs through a more practical method: collaboration. "God Save The Animals" features several individual contributions from his band members (guitarist Samuel Acchione, drummer Tom Kelly and bassist John Heywood) or his longtime collaborator Molly Germer on strings and/or vocals. As with all the records he has recorded since his youth, Giannascoli wrote and rehearsed the songs of "God Save the Animals" alone at home; but in order to find new sounds and to have "a routine outside my apartment" during the pandemic, he began visiting several studios in the Philadelphia area

"God Save the Animals" therefore contains the work of about half a dozen sound engineers whom Giannascoli asked to help him achieve the 'best' recording quality, whatever that means. The result is an album that is more dynamic than ever in its sonic palette and its complexity throughout.
