Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (commonly referred to as Rhythm Nation) is the fourth studio album by Janet Jackson, released on 19 September 1989 by A&M Records. Although label executives wanted material similar to her previous album Control (1986), Jackson insisted on developing a concept album that dealt with social issues. Working with songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, she drew inspiration from various tragedies reported in the news, exploring racism, poverty and drug abuse, as well as themes of romance. Jackson was considered a role model for youth because of her socially conscious lyrics.Rhythm Nation was the singer's second consecutive album to top the Billboard 200 album chart in the US. The album also went 6x platinum, was the best-selling album in the US in 1990 and has sold an estimated 12 million copies worldwide.
