As a release between the sensational works "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" and the lasting effect of "Red", "Starless & Bible Black" has often been overlooked within the King Crimson canon. Although the public was not aware of this to the same extent at the time of its release in March 1974, "Starless & Bible Black" is largely a live album - an experimental hybrid album with concert recordings (most of them improvisations) and studio recordings . Usually the two elements are so well coordinated that it is difficult to keep them apart. "Starless & Bible Black" combined the best of both worlds, while at the same time accurately presenting the unique identity of the line-up at that time
