At first glance, this second record from The Weather Station is a modest affair, gentle and warm. The elements are simple, finger-picked acoustic guitars and three-part harmonies, an unexpected snare drum, a stray electric guitar. Tamara Lindeman's lyrics stay close to home, describing a creaky, dilapidated house, a quiet side street, a seemingly idyllic summer; but also the heartbreak that creeps in insidiously and inexorably, as it always does, quietly, like moths attacking flour.
It's beautiful, certainly, unashamedly beautiful, but restless, all creeping nature, dirt and sweetness, accusation and acceptance. Short, small in scope, and strangely complete. Ten songs that do nothing but speak for themselves, quietly perhaps, but with grace, not a single word out of place.
