Zapp (also known as The Zapp Band or Zapp And Roger) are without question one of the most influential bands in the electronic funk subgenre. The band made a name for themselves in the early eighties due to their inflationary use of the talk box, which would later become the band's trademark. Zapp are at least partially responsible for the G-funk in hip hop; many of their songs have been used by hip hop Artists such as Dr. Dre
The original line-up of Zapp consisted of the four brothers Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry Troutman together with Bobby Glover and Gregory Jackson. In the early days of their career they worked closely with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins
Their debut "I" was released in 1980 and was reminiscent of the legendary P-Funk sound, which can be due to the influence of Clinton's and Collins' input. Zapp's mainstream fame was based almost entirely on the single "More Bounce To The Ounce" from the same album, which is now considered an absolute classic of eighties electronic funk. The single earned the album gold status almost overnight.
