  • "Call Me" - Al Green (voc); James Mitchell (bs, arr); Andrew Love (ts); Jack Hale (tb); Wayne Jackson (tp); Mabon Hodges (g); Charles Hodges (keyb); Archie Turner (p); Leroy Hodges (b); Howard Grimes (dr); The Memphis Strings; and others

Star chefs and music stars share a finely tuned feeling for ingredients, especially when very spicy and mild ingredients combine to form an aromatic whole. This is exactly the secret of Al Green's heavenly cuddly pop, which in the sexually liberated seventies was occasionally called "Songs to Witness Children".

What, however, oscillates superficially as a soft wave, is subtly out-directed singing, which Green with a tenderly melting head voice lowers to the hearing threshold. But be careful, this music shoots peppery notes from the first title on: The fragrant swinging demands in the ingenious single hit "Call Me", the relaxed groovy, yet unmistakable call "Stand Up" with its pointed horn throws are style-forming for Green's art as well as his almost disturbing ability to gain comfort from agonising loneliness ("I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry").

This rhythm-driven music describes itself as bright, intense, powerful, but never gaudy ("Your Love Is Like The Morning Sun"). It finds its grounding in soul ("I'm Waiting") and spiritual depth

"A jewel of forgotten times." (Good Times, August / September 2012)

"The recording of this LP was strictly based on the famous Willie Mitchell sound, and the stereo balance of the original recordings was perfectly reproduced ... (...) Thanks to excellent manufacturing quality, this pressing also offers very smooth running ..." (Stereo, October 2012)
