Rick Wakeman is an English keyboardist, songwriter, composer, and record producer who is best known as the keyboardist for the progressive rock band, Yes. He was a member of the band from 1971 to 1980 and from 1990 to 2004, and has also released numerous solo albums. His solo work has ranged from classical, pop, and rock to new age and experimental.
Wakeman's standout albums include his 1972 solo debut, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, which featured progressive rock arrangements of works by English composers such as Henry VIII and William Byrd; Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974), which was based on Jules Verne's science-fiction novel and was accompanied by a live performance with the London Symphony Orchestra; and Criminal Record (1977), a collection of rock covers.
Some of Wakeman's most popular songs include "The Journey", which was the title track from his 1974 album Journey to the Centre of the Earth; "Space Oddity", a cover of the David Bowie song; "King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table", from the 1976 album King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table; and "The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table", from the 1977 album Criminal Record.
An interesting fact about Rick Wakeman is that he was once a member of the satirical rock band, The Rutles. The Rutles were formed in 1975 as a parody of the Beatles and Wakeman played the role of 'Stig O'Hara', a parody of George Harrison.
