Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer, pianist, and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann is best known for his works for piano and chamber music, but he also wrote several symphonies, operas, and lieder (songs).
Some of Schumann's most popular works include his Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, his Piano Concerto in A Minor, and his symphonies No. 1 (Spring) and No. 4 (Rhenish). His piano pieces, such as "Carnaval" and "Kreisleriana," are among his most performed works. His lieder, such as "Du bist wie eine Blume" and "Die Lotosblume," are also highly praised.
An interesting fact about Schumann is that he was one of the first composers to set texts from the German Romantic poet Heinrich Heine to music. Heine's poems were the basis for some of Schumann's most famous lieder, including "Du bist wie eine Blume" and "Mondnacht."
