  • Milan-born Nino Rota (1911-1979) studied composition with Orefice and Pizzetti. He was encouraged by Arturo Toscanini to enroll at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied composition with Scalero and conducting with Fritz Reiner. His music uniquely blends his love for Italian popular song, American pop music and jazz, and operetta. He kept his music tonal and accessible and had success in concert works, popular and art songs, and opera. But he is best known for his film music. He formed one of the cinema's major director/composer partnerships, writing music for all the films of Federico Fellini up to Rota's death in 1979.

    Coppola used music sparingly in his three-hour saga, and Rota's score switched effortlessly between Italian and American idioms. Rota used themes from prior scores (including the films Fortunella, The Clowns, and Daniele Cortis, and his oratorio Mysterium) in The Godfather. Meanwhile, the director's father, Carmine Coppola, wrote and recorded much of the "source music" in the film -- music that the characters are supposed to be hearing, particularly in the opening wedding scene.

    The two best-known themes in the movie are also Rota's: the sad waltz known as the "Love Theme from The Godfather" (first heard in its full form when Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) dances with his daughter after her wedding; and the main theme, a yearning Italian popular-style song that, with words later added, has the incongruous title "Speak Softly, Love."
