Patti Smith, "the first publishing poetess to turn her entire poetry into Rock´n Roll and lure experimental rock fans into the forbidden cinema of her hallucinating fantasy" (New York Times), started as a lateral. In the beginning Lenny Kaye accompanied her author readings on the guitar, star photographer Robert Mapplethorpe contributed money for the underground cult single "Hey Joe".Encouraged by the success, Smith delivered "Horses" in 1975, an album on which she melts rock riffs and speech rhythms into a punky-trashy sound mixture. The scene was electrified, fabulised of the "best garage sound of the 70s" ("Creem") and suspected that Smith had "pulled the stuff of Rimbaud, Burroughs, Dylan and Velvet Underground onto a hot syringe and pressed it under his skin" ("Sounds").In later productions, which were dismissed as sentimental and narcissistic outpourings, the rock lyricist was not able to tie in with the metallically hard and unadorned language of "Horses". Thus this record remains the impressive unique piece of a singing visionary of the Rock´n Roll.ReviewsW. Doebeling in Rolling Stone 6 / 06: "Unbelievable how vital and exciting 'Horses' still sounds today, how deep Patti's shaman howl still penetrates, as this bold Primitivism does its work as if there were no more than 30 years have passed since this epochal work for ignition was brought. Now in fabulous sound quality, un- my present and dynamic."
