Teresa Berganza is a Spanish mezzo-soprano opera singer, widely considered one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. She began her career in the 1950s, and went on to appear in many of the world's most important opera houses and concert halls, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Vienna State Opera. She has made numerous recordings for EMI, including her signature album, the Spanish Zarzuela.
Berganza's standout albums include Spanish Zarzuela (1962), Lucia di Lammermoor (1966), Don Pasquale (1966), Carmen (1967), and La Boheme (1969). Among her most famous songs are 'Seguidilla' from Carmen, 'Una voce poco fa' from The Barber of Seville, and 'Ach, ich fuhl's' from The Magic Flute.
An interesting fact about Teresa Berganza is that she was the first Spanish artist to be awarded the French Legion of Honour in 2002, the highest decoration in France. She was also the first opera singer to receive the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, Spain's highest award in the arts.
