The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington, by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle. The band, a quartet for most of its existence, has had numerous charting singles and have released over two hundred albums. The original line-up consisted of Wilson on guitar, Bogle on guitar and lead vocals, Howie Johnson on drums, and Nokie Edwards on bass guitar.
The Ventures had their first hit in 1960 with the single "Walk - Don't Run", written by Johnny Smith and originally released in 1954. They followed it with a string of successful releases, including "Perfidia", "Ram-Bunk-Shush", "Lullaby of the Leaves", "The 2000 Pound Bee", "Driving Guitars", and "Walk, Don't Run '64".
The band's 1965 album The Ventures in Space is considered one of their standout releases. It featured instrumental versions of the theme songs from several science fiction films and television shows, including Doctor Who and Lost in Space.
The Ventures' greatest hit was the 1970 single "Hawaii Five-O", which was the theme song for the CBS television series of the same name. The song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also a top 10 hit in the UK.
An interesting fact about The Ventures is that they have performed live in all 50 US states, as well as in over 60 countries.
