Townes Van Zandt was an American singer-songwriter and musician who is best known for his poetic lyrics and vivid storytelling. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1944 and grew up in a wealthy family, though his parents divorced when he was a teenager. He began writing songs and playing guitar when he was a teenager and released his first album, For the Sake of the Song, in 1968.

Van Zandt's most acclaimed albums include 1972's The Late Great Townes Van Zandt, 1974's High, Low and In Between, 1978's Flyin' Shoes and 1996's No Deeper Blue. His most popular songs include “If I Needed You”, “Pancho and Lefty”, “Tecumseh Valley” and “To Live is to Fly”.

An interesting fact about Townes Van Zandt is that his song “Pancho and Lefty” was covered by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard in 1983 and reached number one on the country music charts. Van Zandt's influence on Americana and folk music has been highly influential, with his songs being covered by numerous artists such as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.
