Birdpop - Guess What?!

Birdpop was born in a Brunswick shed on a Friday afternoon in February, 2022. Jack Spencer texted friend D’arcy Noonan asking, “know any good drummers?” Noonan, bass in hand, replied, “I know someone who wants to be a drummer.” Beatrice Bleechmore had never drummed in her life. The group were joined by Spencer’s former housemate, Sonny “Electric” Witton on lead guitar. They were quickly called up to play shows alongside internationally acclaimed Melbourne bands such as Romero and Possible Humans.

GUESS WHAT!? blends folk, psychedelia and melodic classicism with a collaborative song writing approach that Spencer describes as “friends discovering music together”. In “Planes” bandmates thought they heard Spencer sing “customs on my back” – so they kept it. The verses grew to visions of “airport camp chairs, watching the planes touchdown with Anthony Bourdain”.

“Took Two Wheels” sees Witton behind the Rhodes, “you’re in your room softly crying to yourself about the news and how it’s all wrong.” Here, the trials of young adulthood coalesce open-endedly and endearingly. It offers respite before the singalong, “Let It Out” – the group’s palpable sense of love ever present.

Recorded at Sound Recording Studios in Djaara Country under Alex Bennett (The Teskey Brothers, CW Stoneking), Guess What!? started and finished in the final week of November 2022.
