Booker Little was the first trumpet soloist in jazz to emerge with his own sound after the death of Clifford Brown. His early death (he died in 1961 at the age of 23) ended what would surely have been a great career. This music is outstanding, sensitive and modern jazz, one of the best albums made under Little's leadership. The pieces are recorded with great feeling from the first note. The album can really live up to expectations, it has many musically strong moments and remains interesting throughout. Booker Little had a bold vision of jazz and we will miss his skills, even more than before.
Booker Little (tp); Julian Priester (tb); Eric Dolphy (as, b-cl,fl); Don Friedman (p); Art Davis, Ron Carter (b); Max Roach (dr, vib, perc).
