Alice Coltrane is the undisputed godmother of the spiritual jazz of the Sixties and Seventies, and even today an avowed influence on such diverse artists as Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Solange and Radiohead. With the album "Kirtan: Turiya Sings", recorded in 1981 but now available for the first time in this form and to a wide audience, one experiences an Alice Coltrane who has intensified the spiritual elements of her music and made them more tangible than ever. The songs on the album are mantras originally released only on cassette for members of her Sai Anantam Ashram.Ravi Coltrane, son of the musician and John Coltrane, has liberated the lost original tapes of the deeply meditative recordings from overdubs made at the time for this regular first release, exposing the core of the songs. "Kirtan: Turiya Sings" presents only Alice Coltrane's organ playing and singing, and yet is a moving, overwhelmingly rich, haunting work that is unlikely to leave any listener with an open mind untouched.Alice Coltrane is the undisputed godmother of the spiritual jazz of the sixties and seventies, and even today a declared influence on such diverse artists as Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Solange and Radiohead.
