Knitted from big melodies and heavy-duty electronic carpets, "Love What Survives" is in a way the essence of their work to date, adding various vocal guests and musical personalities (James Blake, Micachu, King Krule) to experiment together, rethinking forms, erasing things, playing with pop lore, letting it all grow together. The new tracks were largely created on two vintage synthesizers (Korg MS-20, Korg Delta), both of which, according to the band, had that "punky, sloppy quality reminiscent of Robert Wyatt," which, with its industrial edge and unmistakably direct sound, should move Mount Kimbie to their latest sound update. The pulsating motorik beat of the single "Blue Train Lines," for example, sends King Krule straight into the fast lane from which to deliver his jagged vocal salvos. The record's open, expansive aura is further owed to the fact that it was created between London and Los Angeles, two locations the duo shuttled between to host joint sessions and refine ideas.
