War is an American funk band from Long Beach, California, best known for their political and socially conscious lyrics, Latin-tinged rhythms, and genre-defying fusion of jazz, funk, rock, reggae, Latin, and R&B. The band was formed in 1969 by Eric Burdon, Harold Brown, Charles Miller, Lee Oskar, Howard Scott, and B.B. Dickerson.
War's most popular albums include All Day Music (1971), The World Is a Ghetto (1972), and Why Can't We Be Friends? (1975). All Day Music features the hit single "Slippin' Into Darkness," which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard charts, while The World Is a Ghetto was the band's first number 1 album and features their biggest hit, "The Cisco Kid," which reached number 2 on the Billboard charts. Why Can't We Be Friends? was their third number 1 album and includes the title track, which was their highest-charting single, reaching number 7 on the Billboard charts.
An interesting fact about War is that they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
