Woody Herman (May 16, 1913 – October 29, 1987) was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, singer, and big band leader. In the 1930s and 1940s, he led one of the most popular big bands in the United States, with hits such as "At the Woodchopper's Ball," "Woody's Whistle," and "Caldonia." Herman's career spanned over fifty years, from the 1930s to the 1980s. He was a major influence on several generations of jazz musicians, including Count Basie, Stan Kenton, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Woody Herman's most successful albums include Blues on Parade (1955), At the Woodchopper's Ball (1959), and The Third Herd (1966). Standout songs include "At the Woodchopper's Ball," "Woody's Whistle," "Blue Flame," and "Apple Honey."

An interesting fact about Woody Herman is that he was the first jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time magazine in 1947. He was also the first jazz musician to be featured in a feature film, with a cameo appearance in the movie Ball of Fire (1941).
