  • A Tribe Called Quest are widely hailed as one of the greatest rap acts of all time. The trio (2-microphone pioneers Phife Dawg and Q-Tip along with DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad) was one of the most lyrically gifted in hip-hop. Their blend of jazz and bass heavy beats (East Coast "Muddy Bass") was and is truly innovative.

    Rather than being a great rap album like the previous one, "Beats, Rhymes & Life" is a great Tribe album and fits perfectly with its place in the Tribe canon in the mid-90s. It has his signature smooth style and flow with a much darker theme and is more independent than their previous album.
