This recording of Saint-Saën's Carnival of Animals and Prokofiev's symphonic tale for children, Peter and the Wolf, is simply beastly, if not to say spectacular. Introduced by the animal roar of the London zoo residents and commented on by a human voice in between, the various instruments of the orchestra introduce themselves in a narrative context.
The figures and animals are each given a characteristic theme that is played by a single instrument or register. If Prokofiev's composition primarily pursues music-pedagogical goals, with Saint-Saëns musical fun is always in the foreground of the action. Numerous allusions to works by great composers are just as much a part of being roguish as an extremely lively animal life, in which there are also wooden-sounding fossils as a xylophone.Both works combine artistic standards, musical humour and didactic functionality in a fascinating way and therefore enjoy a popularity that is at least as great with adults as it is with children. For interpretation and sound, this DECCA record deserves the unique rating of "animal good". -
