It took the lawyers at Columbia Records a full seven months to extricate Janis Joplin and her band from an unfortunate contractual relationship with Mainstream Records. Only after that, in August 1968, Cheap Thrills could appear. A celebrated performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before had caused a sensation and drawn the public's attention to Joplin, but apart from a poorly produced LP, no record of her had been released so far.
The expectations were high - and Cheap Thrills lived up to them. The number 1 album sold over a million copies and cemented Joplin's reputation as the first true female rock superstar. Her extraordinary singing talent, her unmistakable blues voice transports you straight back to the year 1968.
