  • "Mama's Gun" is the second studio album of Neo Soul singer ERYKAH BADU released in 2000.

Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album mixes funk, soul and jazz styles.

The very intimate and personal album spans topics such as insecurity, social problems and personal relationships and reached platinum status only two months after its release.

Mama's Gun" also features guests like soul singer BETTY WRIGHT and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

The album contains the single "Bag Lady", which shot to number 1 in the R&B charts and into the top ten of the Billboard charts with its colourful, artistic music video.

"Bag Lady" was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best female R&B vocal performance".

And the song "Didn't Cha Know?" as the best R&B song. Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for seizing her chances like STEVIE WONDER and NINA SIMONE once did at their prime, adding that BADU "takes her art to a new level.

Entertainment Weekly called the album a "70's soul homage with live musicians and a smooth funk sound that would fit on a CTI record"

    Reviews

"What the R&B innovator does on 'Mama's Gun' between old funk and neo-soul, between old-timer jazz and hip-hop modernity is always fascinating (Rolling Stone, September 2014)
