The first hint that multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood (widely known as Radiohead's guitarist) might be a gifted composer came in 1997 when, bored with the provincial strings that dominated the end of Britpop, he steered Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki to arrange OK Computer's "Climbing Up The Walls." Where the traditional rock approach has always been to use strings to enhance melody and opulence, Greenwood used them to create discord and atmosphere; in other words, he played orchestra like he played his guitarGreenwood made his Hollywood debut with the scoring of the Paul Anderson Academy Award-winning film "There Will Be Blood" in 2007. The film is a loose adaptation of Upton Sinclar's novel "Oil!"; the characters find themselves in a desolate California town circa 1920. While Greenwood has always been open about the origins and inspirations behind many of his techniques (Penderecki, Gorecki, and Messiaen), the string arrangements of "There Will Be Bloods" nevertheless sound avant-garde and exploratory in the context of Hollywood film musicFrom the goosebump-inducing glissandos on opener "Wide Open Spaces" to the spiraling staccatos on "Future Markets" to the creeping dissonance in "Henry Plainview," Greenwood's strange, experimental sensibilities lurk around every cornerNow the official soundtrack "There Will Be Blood" is also available on vinyl!
