Magdalena Bay, the Los Angeles duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, create magical pop music that floats in the ether of our collective social cosmos. Though based in California, their essence is in the clouds, exuding unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness and distorted neo-hooks. Magdalena Bay blends the familiar and sentimental with innovative soundscapes, in keeping with the times.
Tenenbaum and Lewin met as teenagers in a high school music program in Miami. Tenenbaum, who moved to Florida from Buenos Aires at the age of one, and Lewin, a guitar shredder influenced by his father's prog and concept rock records, quickly recognized their kindred spirits. They formed a prog band called Tabula Rasa and began a romance. Both were experienced musicians: Tenenbaum was a pianist and singer, Lewin was self-taught in production and music theory. Although they attended different colleges, they kept their band going and traveled for hours to rehearsals before realizing two things: Their relationship was undeniable, and prog rock wasn't resonating with young audiences. They shifted their focus to pop and explored its craft, which led to the formation of Magdalena Bay.
They learned the complexities of writing and producing pop music and strived to create something interesting within the genre. They described their music broadly as "pop" and released several EPs and singles before releasing their 2021 album "Mercurial World". It was praised for its melodic hooks and meticulous production and often described as "synth-pop". Their success is reflected in their streaming numbers, social media followers and festival appearances. Magdalena Bay's stylized online aesthetic complements her music and creates a cohesive artistic vision. Tenenbaum says, "We love to expand the world of our music beyond sound into videos or graphics." Lewin adds, "We try to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it." This holistic approach, known as "world-building", is at the heart of their artistic work.
