  • Marlon Williams says of his self-titled debut, "Each song is a personality in its own right," summarizing a remarkably confident nine-track journey that is held together by one of the most versatile and haunting voices around. "I almost never sing past my character. Even if it's a very personal song, once it's written, it's not mine alone." Marlon recorded his album at home and used The Sitting Room at Lyttelton Harbour in New Zealand for the rest

On "Marlon Williams" an eclectic yet stringent set comes together, ranging from the almost acrobatic-looking opener "Hello Miss Lonesome" to the "Rubber Soul"-like "After All" and the compassionate "Lonely Side Of Her" to the serene everyday wisdom of "Everyone's Got Something To Say". The effortless oscillation between the sexes takes shape here in his revealing, androgynous version of the traditional lamentation of "When I Was A Young Girl", which has also been interpreted by Nina Simone or Feist. This talent for filling his material with all his personality is also evident in the cover versions of "Lost Without You" and the 1974 jewel "Silent Passage", originally performed by Bob Carpenter. The cover versions fit seamlessly with his originals, as do the narrative noir pieces "Strange Things" and "Dark Child", which deliver gallows humor to a widescreen groove. In Australia and New Zealand Williams has already been nominated for lots of awards - now the Northern Hemisphere should open its eyes as well.
