In late 1961, Spector formed Philles Records with Lester Sill, buying out his mentor the following year. The slogan was "Tomorrow's sound today," and Phil Spector lived up to that claimThree-track tape machines were state of the art at the time, and he perfected the method of "bouncing" the tracks to get the most sound possible. Over time, his "two-minute symphonies for the kids were increasingly gilded by his 'everything-but-the-kitchen-sink' production with strings, percussion and a variety of vocalsSpector scored his second U.S. chart-topper and his first as a producer in 1962 with the Gene Pitney-penned He's A Rebel. Spector became increasingly obsessed with the production process. My records are structured like a Wagner opera. They start simple and end with dynamic power, meaning and purpose. I made them up.' He retired from the music business, returning only sporadically to work with the Beatles (their Let It Be album, as well as solo LPs by George Harrison and John Lennon), and a handful of other artists, including Dion, Cher and the Ramones.
