Saskatchewan is about as it sounds: a prairie province in Canada. Barely twice the size of Germany, less than a million people live in this rugged region. Lots of nature. Lots of peace and quiet. And plenty of time to fill the peace with natural sounds. The quartet The Dead South from there already showed with their first album "Good Company" that they are anything but a band of hillbillies.The four sheltered, hairy, bearded guys around singer Nate Hilts gave genres like folk, bluegrass or alternative country a lot of fresh wind. With force, wit and a rather irreverent way of packing words into sounds. The instrumentation remains deliberately spartan: guitars, cello, banjo, kick drum, mandolin - an acoustic foundation for brilliant lead vocals and harmony vocals. If the first album was a promise, they finally fulfil it with their new work "Illusion & Doubt".No question, the four-piece from the prairie has matured. The exuberant energy and joy of playing are now joined by clever harmony twists, great virtuoso instrumental interludes and - now and then - surprisingly catchy melodies. But Hills & Co. are still far from tame.
