  • Alton Ellis (September 1, 1938-October 10, 2008) was a Jamaican rocksteady singer and musician who is considered one of the founders of the style. Mr. Soul of Jamaica from 1967 was his first album. One of the innovators of the genre, who was given the informal title of Godfather of Rocksteady, he wrote some original reggae hits that contain a lot of soul.

A familiar blend of fine harmonies and impressive key works. Mr. Soul of Jamaica is packed with wonderful, melodic songs that will delight reggae music lovers and soul fans alike. Ellis performs every song fabulously on this record, including You Make Me So Happy, Why Birds Follow Spring and Ain't That Lovin' You.

Anton Ellis was inducted into the International Reggae and World Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2006. Two years later, he died of cancer at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He played an important role in popularizing dancehall, reggae and hip hop music.
