  • "Straight Life", recorded by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard between the better known classics "Red Clay" and "First Light", is perhaps Hubbard's best recording ever.

Hubbard, who is supported by a group of well-known musicians, including tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, keyboarder Herbie Hancock, guitarist George Benson, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette, is astounded by "Straight Life" (just listen to this intro) and "Mr. Clean", where he constructs classical solos.

The very remarkable set is rounded off with the trumpeter's duet with George Benson in a lyrical version of the ballad "Here's That Rainy Day". This exciting album is essential for all serious jazz collections.

Recording: November 1970 at the Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (USA), by Rudy Van Gelder
    Production: Creed Taylor
