Claudio Abbado took up his position as the new principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in December 1989, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, with this recording of Mahler's 1st Symphony. Exactly 30 years after this event, the celebrated recording is released on vinyl for the first timeGustav Mahler was 28 years old when he completed his first symphony in 1888. He had already made a name for himself as a conductor at the Leipzig Opera and now wanted to become known as a composer. His first symphony is called "Titan," named after a human giant from Greek mythology. But Mahler's first symphony is not just about a hero. Mahler himself writes of the "awakening of nature from long hibernation," of the continuation of life "in full sail." The idyll is disturbed more and more frequently, until finally, in the last section, "like a flash of lightning from a dark cloud," a somber theme of death unfoldsParticularly noteworthy, in addition to the outstanding sound quality, is the high-quality 180g vinyl pressing on Optimal.
