  • Real blues ... He took the pain in his soul and the dirt on his hands and made songs out of it ... Robert Pete Williams ... the most avant-garde blues artist ever recorded. No punk band ever met the choppy, bitter anger in the riffs that Williams played 35 years ago. No rapper came close to his ability to conjure up the agony of a life in prison or to twist the language to describe the gruesome fascination of a chance encounter with a seductive woman. His blues were extremely personal, sometimes difficult to understand. And no other artist could capture the emotional effects of a desperate situation better than him.

Robert Pete Williams had never been admitted when he was discovered in Angola Prison in Louisiana, where he was convicted of murder. His style was probably unique among all blues players, neither his guitar playing nor his singing could be placed in one of the usual regional categories, be it "East Coast", "Mississippi Delta" or "Texas Blues". His music and his singing were spontaneous and original, you could not find any influence of another blues musician in his idiosyncratic and intensely personal appearances. The blues student Pete Welding described Williams' music as "brutal, mean and above all passionate like the man himself."
