Fans will be happy to hear that after five years, a new album from The Afghan Whigs is finally in the wings. It is called "How Do You Burn?" and contains ten new tracks from the quintet from Ohio.
it's been 20 years since the band decided to take a break, then ten years ago The Afghan Whigs got back together. Since then, two new studio albums have been released that have delighted both fans and critics.
So now, five years after their last album "In Spades", there is finally new music from Greg Dulli and his band. The pre-released singles let us guess that not much has changed in the sound of the alternative rockers. Catchy drama meets soulful drive, played compactly to the point by a great band.
The first new song, "I'll Make You See God," was released by The Afghan Whigs in February as part of the soundtrack to the video game Gran Turismo 7. Quite coherent, it might be the most direct rock song the band has ever written. "The Getaway", on the other hand, is a sunny midtempo ballad with a slightly melancholic feel. Also the meanwhile typical strings can be found here again.
The band members recorded the ten new tracks separately in California, Cincinnati, New Jersey and New York.
The title of "How Do You Burn?" was written by the recently deceased Mark Lanegan, a longtime friend of the band and Greg Dulli's partner in The Gutter Twins. Lanegan also contributed backing vocals to two of the songs.
