  • 1964, the first Berlin Jazz Days: the highlight Friday, 25 September: last concert of the night: Miles Davis. It is logical that Columbia's European subsidiary, CBS, released an LP of this legendary event.

The new quintet, first with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax - and not yet as a composer - captivated and provoked the audience in the Philharmonie from the first to the last second. The classics "Miles(tones)", "So What" and "Walkin'" were played in incredibly fast meters, the ballads are tender and dreamy. In later concerts, such a mysterious atmosphere was hardly ever created again, thanks in part to the excellent acoustics of the large hall. Since the audience was also sitting behind the stage, Miles could not turn his back provocatively on anyone; so he just squatted down in between. But this did not prevent him from making his solos lyrical and delicate, mostly in the finest nuances, audible at low volume in every angle. The rhythmic design by the young drummer Anthony Williams gives them the necessary tension. Miles in top form, an enthusiastic audience, a captivating room acoustics, a convincing recording technique and a super pressing on virgin vinyl - what more does the jazz friend want? So the credit card drawn!

This Speakers Corner production was made using analog master tape and 100% pure analog mastering.

Recording: September 1964 live in the Berliner Philharmonie by the SFB in Mono
    Production: Rudy Wolpert

    Reviews

"The SFB's Mono recording of the Gig developed into a fireworks display of the Improvisations in which the musicians are sensitive, but also passionately one on the other in the first place. Especially the fast-paced milestones, a relaxed 'Autumn Leaves' and the immensely dynamic 'Walkin' testify to from the desire to push the boundaries that have been set so far to exceed..." (Good Times, December 2017 / January 2018)

"All the instruments are beautifully accentuated with their timbres, they stand out so cleanly that one almost forgets that this is 'only' a mono recording." (Stereo, January 2018)
