  • Who doesn't have a very old, noodled copy of "The Clown" in their closet? The cover shredded, the inner sleeve torn? Or one of the rare re-releases made of cheap thin vinyl with banal cover graphics? Anyone who hasn't played this treasure on the many Mingus LPs, CDs and downloads for ages should get it quickly!

"The Clown" is and remains one of the must-have records in a jazz collection. The LP was recorded for Atlantic in New York in March 1957 in a small line-up of only five, and contains exclusively original compositions by the bassist. Three of them were to be heard in many concerts with other line-ups over the next 15 years. But the original recordings on this LP were and remain the most intense, the most varied and simply the best. Especially since the label always attached importance to good studio conditions and provided the musicians with time en masse.

So "The Clown" can be enjoyed in a new release from the first note of "Haitian Fight Song" to "William Morris Sends Regrets" in the title track.

Recording: February and March 1957 in New York City by Tom Dowd and Larry Hiller in Mono
    Production: Nesuhi Ertegün
    Reviews
"Who has so far been content with one CD, it must be here, since the organic sound in the Vinyl format is optimally reproduced." (Good Times, February / March 2017)
