Eva Cassidy was known for her powerful, soulful soprano voice and her unique interpretations of jazz, folk and blues music. The US singer and guitarist died in 1996 at the young age of 33.Two years after her death, in 1998, the compilation "Songbird" was released, a special best-of and a beautiful memory of the artist and her work. At that time, however, she was virtually unknown in the UK, with the album reaching only the lower ranks of the British charts. Two years after its release, however, the British public became aware of Cassidy's music when her versions of Sting's "Fields Of Gold" and of the classic film score "Over The Rainbow" were played on BBC Radio 2. Shortly thereafter, "Songbird" reached number one in the UK.
