Toots Hibbert, Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias formed The Maytals in 1962. The Jamaican musicians became one of the most famous ska and rocksteady vocal groups and contributed to the popularization of reggae music in the sixties. Their 1968 single "Do The Reggay" was the first song to use the word "reggae," leading the Oxford English Dictionary to credit Toots and The Maytals for the etymology of the word "reggae."After signing with Island Records in 1973, they recorded and released their fourth album, From the Roots. The album was recorded with Leslie Kong and contains some of the Maytals' most explosive tracks, with their penchant for gospel still audible.
