In 1957 Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan recorded the LP Blues in Time, which was the first of only two studio albums of the two musicians in the quartet. The same basic instrumentation that Mulligan had established with his important "Pianoless Quartet" with Chet Baker was used, but with Desmond's alto saxophone instead of Baker's trumpet. As a highly lyrical player, Desmonds Sound perfectly matched the deep tone of Mulligan's baritone saxophone, and their interplay is highly satisfying. Although Mulligan and Desmond had never worked together in the studio before, they had often performed on the same stage and had, for example, played a joint closing jam session at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955.The huge success of Blues in Time led to a second album called Two of a Mind, which they recorded in 1962 and which is presented here in its entirety. This successor was generally regarded as even more outstanding than the great first encounter of the two.
